Athleisure: Yoga in the Sun

For those of you who don’t know, Fitness Hub in West Palm Beach, FL is a pop-up fitness club that just happens to sell activewear. All their staff are women, and they are on the forefront of defining the modern woman.

The owner hails from Boston. She has a background in IT and a passion for fitness. At times, she would even leave her day job to go teach an athletics class. When she came down here, she joined all the separate studios: yoga, barre, pilates, and the regular gym. Driving from one to another really frustrated her, which is when the “lightbulb” went off: why not create a state of the art facility that would meet every workout need?

So she addressed the issue, and decided to “build a community through fitness.” However, when she went to the City of West Palm Beach for permits, they told her that her storefront would have to also be a traditional retail space. Thank God they did, because activewear sales is the fastest growing segment in women’s fashion. Without knowing it, the City put her on the path to success. They feel they are “putting Levi’s out of business.”

NYC gets it, Boston gets it, and it’s time for FL to get it. One of their goals is “to bring the perks of living in a progressive city to South Florida.”

The firm definitely will succeed, there is no doubt about it. The staff excels at execution. Take the story of their grand opening. They aren’t even supposed to be open right now, as their space at 312 Clematis street is still being built out. They didn’t want to miss season, so they did at popup shop at their present location, 218 Clematis St. They came up with the idea two weeks before Black Friday, hired a seasoned buyer with experience working in luxury for firms such as LVMH, and opened for the biggest shopping day of the year. They killed it.

Since then they have adopted a strict policy of giving back along the following policies: female empowerment, community building, and free classes.

The Modern Woman

Every day, Fitness Director Ashley Bogosian and Operations Manager Emily Budrys come in to help redefine what it means to be a woman. Out with the old stereotype of “dainty, ditzy, and dependent,” in with reality: strong, reliable, fit, and independent. This is the new chic girl, and they want to help you become her. In their own words, “we want to work with you every day. We will engage… nobody slips through the cracks.”

And they mean it. While at the shop, I watched them give the same amount of attention to people who clearly were there just to look around and weren’t buying. They displayed a high code of ethics, and did not prey on peoples’ insecurities.

Engaging with the community

Here are a few quotes from the beginning of our conversation:

  • “Founded a community.”
  • “Building a community through fitness”
  • “Exercise is where all my best friends are… I have a broad range of diverse people in my group now”
  • “It’s like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants… you find your common place.”
  • “You can really count on people. You would never think you would be friends with these girls.”
  • “Doing so much more than exercise… greater end result than just a gym.”
  • “That’s why we’re the hub.”

Clearly, they believe that exercise can bring people together and knit a strong bond. They also believe in giving back to the community. They donated all of their tips from people who attended exercise classes to the Race For the Cure, and they are donating a Dance Fusion class to the upcoming FreshFest. They feel that dancing is great for the brain as it utilizes neutral pathways that most people don’t use. It is really fun, high energy, and a great workout. Make sure to check them out this February 13!

Free Classes

Right now, they are also offering free classes six days a week. They’ve been offering them for the past two months, and will start to transition them to strategic partnerships. As you can see, they offer quite a variety:

fight class
Body Combat
weights
PUMP IT UP!

I stopped by to join them for a salsa class, and really enjoyed myself. They spent a lot of money to bring in world-class teacher Grigol Kranz, and we all had a good time.

When I asked them about how many more months they could keep up giving away free classes, they gave me an answer that a CEO of a Fortune 500 company would approve of, which is that “this is a beta test–what works, what to expect, and how to give back.” As a for-profit business, they can’t run on a completely free model. Nevertheless they remain committed to social enterprise.

Once the classes do wind down, the firm plans on partnering with the Norton Museum of Art’s Art After Dark program:

yoga by candlelight
Yoga by Candlelight, Anyone?

and with the In-Motion Dance Center to teach and coach aspiring youth dancers and athletes.

All in all, the women down at Fitness Hub really know what they are doing. Their focus is on personal attention and sustainable values and exercises. Above all, they want everyone to take care of their bodies and live healthy, considerate, mindful lives. So, when you are next in the downtown area, go to their pop-up shop and show them some love!
